Scotland says goodbye to Queen Elizabeth II. Will you now question the monarchy?

The Scots filled the famous Royal Mile in Edinburgh yesterday to watch the car with the coffin of Queen Elizabeth II pass by almost silently and then lined up to pay their last respects during the vigil at St Egidio Cathedral. But if, at the moment of goodbye, they seem united around the late monarch, the question is what the future will bring for King Charles III and for the monarchy in Scotland, which insists on wanting to be independent from the United Kingdom. A possible independence does not necessarily mean the end of the monarchy, but it could open the doors to the republic.

The day before, when the new monarch was proclaimed, a small group of protesters chose to boo Charles III. “Another Scotland is possible”, read a t-shirt, “Republic Now”, read a poster. “Screw imperialism. They abolish the monarchy”, said another, with a woman having been arrested and accused of disturbing the peace. Also in front of the British Parliament, where the new monarch yesterday made his first speech before the two chambers (of the Lords and the Commons), there was a person detained by a poster that read “not my king”. Small protests that could be repeated in the next few days, when Charles III travels to Northern Ireland and Wales.
