The director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, said this Monday that “the long-awaited mission of experts from the UN watchdog to the Zaporijia nuclear power plant in Ukraine is on its way”.
“The day has come”, wrote Rafael Grossi on the social network Twitter, adding that the “IAEA support and assistance mission, based in Vienna, is now on its way”.
“We must protect the security of the biggest nuclear facility in Ukraine and Europe. “Proud to lead this mission that will be at the ZNPP (Zaporijia Nuclear Power Plant) later this week,” Grossi said, without elaborating.
The situation in the vicinity of the plant has been a matter of international concern in recent weeks, after the recent bombings in the vicinity, which Moscow and Kiev mutually blame, and which raised alarms about a possible nuclear accident.
