City Hall says it is “not feasible” to enforce noise limits at night in Lisbon

The response to a complaint by the Aqui Mora Gente association left the residents’ group in disbelief: “Faced with this answer, what can the residents do? Move house? Move to another city?”. Residents complain about the constant noise in Cais do Sodré and São Paulo.

Residents complain about the constant noise, dawn into the night, in the areas of Cais do Sodré and São Paulo. The Lisbon City Council says it is “not feasible” to enforce noise limits in the city’s nightlife areas and that “intervention in established social dynamics” would have “political costs” that “have to be considered”.

These statements are part of the answer given by councilman Ângelo Pereira’s office to a complaint by the association Aqui Mora Gente – Association of Residents of the City of Lisbon, which brings together residents of historic areas of the city such as Bairro Alto, Bica or Cais do Sodré, and that wrote to the city council requesting measures against what it says is an unbearable situation for residents, deprived of rest due to the noise that lasts late into the night.

The answer leaves little room for any intervention: “The only effective solution would be a generalized reduction in opening hours, something that, we must agree, would economically affect the entire commercial fabric.
