Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro said Thursday he will propose to his Ukrainian counterpart a solution to end the war with Russia similar to the process that ended the 1982 Falklands war between Argentina and the United Kingdom.
The two leaders will have their first contact since the Russian military invasion of Ukrainian territory in a telephone conversation scheduled for next Monday. “I know what the solution to the case would look like, but I’m not going to move forward. The solution to the case (…) How did Argentina’s war with the UK in 1982 end? It’s there. Sorry, the truth are things that hurt, but you have to understand,” Bolsonaro told the channel “CNN Brazil”.

The United Kingdom holds sovereignty over the Falkland Islands, claimed by Argentina since 1833. Both countries clashed over the archipelago in 1982, in a war that began in April and ended in June of that year with the victory of British forces.
Jair Bolsonaro, backed by the Brazilian far-right and who is seeking re-election in next October’s presidential election, claimed that it was Volodymyr Zelensky who sought a conversation with him.
Since the beginning of the war, Bolsonaro has avoided condemning Russian attacks in Ukraine and has maintained a “neutral” and “balanced” position in the face of the conflict.
