The Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine for covid-19 is already authorized for use in the United Kingdom, which thus becomes the first western country to license a vaccine against the new coronavirus.
The vaccine was authorized for emergency use by the Medicines and Health Products Regulatory Authority (MHRA), following clinical trials showing that it was 95% effective.
The North American pharmaceutical company and the German biotechnology company are now awaiting the decisions of the United States of the European Union. The British regulator was empowered by the Boris Johnson government to approve the vaccine under special regulations before January 1, the date on which he will become fully responsible for the authorization of medicines in the United Kingdom after he leaves the EU.
