Footballer Javier Mascherano announced this Sunday, with some surprise, the end of his professional career, after his team’s (1-0) home defeat, Estudiantes de La Plata, against Argentinos Juniors, for the Argentine League Cup.
In the third round of the competition, the 36-year-old Argentine international midfielder started and was full time, but he was surprised when, at a press conference, he revealed that he had played the last game of his career.
“I want to announce that today I finished my career in professional football. I want to thank this club [Estudiantes de La Plata] for giving me the opportunity to end my career in Argentina. This decision has nothing to do with the club or the results. It is a personal decision, “said Mascherano.
After training at River Plate, Mascherano spent most of his career in Europe, first at West Ham and Liverpool and then at FC Barcelona, where he spent eight seasons, having won two Champions League editions, five Spanish championships and five King’s cups.
