Uruguayan striker Benfica had already been one of the targets of the Catalans in the summer.
Darwin Núñez was quick to make an impact at Benfica. Hired by Almería for 24 million euros, the Uruguayan striker quickly asserted himself as the eagles’ starter and scored four goals in eight official matches, to which he added several assists.
The young striker’s good start to the season led Barcelona to “intensify interest” in Darwin, ESPN reveals. The Catalan emblem had already coveted the international “charrúa” last summer, but Benfica ended up getting the better of the race, by paying the 24 M € required by Almería.
