A 25-year-old Portuguese national has been arrested at Singapore’s Changi Airport after authorities discovered more than 36 kilograms of cannabis in his possession, a grave offense that carries the potential for the death penalty under strict local drug laws. According to reporting by The Straits Times, the incident took place at Terminal 2, where the suspect arrived on April 14 with plans to depart the following day.

The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) confirmed that the man was flagged for additional security checks by police dogs at the baggage arrival area, which ultimately led to the discovery of 68 packages containing approximately 36.3 kilograms of cannabis concealed within his luggage.

Singapore enforces some of the most rigorous drug trafficking regulations in the world. Under the Misuse of Drugs Act, the importation or exportation of more than 500 grams of cannabis is a capital offense punishable by death.

Given that the amount seized in this case significantly exceeds that threshold, the legal ramifications for the detainee are severe. While the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been contacted for comment regarding the ongoing situation, there has been no immediate official statement.

The suspect remains in custody as local authorities proceed with the investigation into the smuggling attempt.
