As the other would say, this has so far been “peaners”. The first of the four demolishing stages of the Volta a Itália took place on Sunday and, to the surprise of most experts, there were four protagonists who would not be on the list of the main favorites when, at the beginning of the month, they left Palermo.
The main one, a 22 year old boy from A dos Francos, in Caldas da Rainha, resisted the attack of the rest, Wilco Kelderman and Jai Hindley, of a Sunweb that proved to be the strongest team of the race, and Tao Geoghegan Hart, a of Ineos’ future values and winner of the 15th stage, at the top of Piancavallo. João Almeida was fourth and the trio became his biggest threat.
