Mali President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita and his prime minister, Boubou Cissé, were detained late yesterday afternoon during a military uprising, said one of the leaders of the riot quoted by France-Presse agency

“We can tell you that the President and the Prime Minister are under our control. We arrested them at his home (of the head of state, in Bamako, capital), ”one of the leaders of the riot, anonymously, told the news agency. Another soldier said that the two leaders are “in an armored vehicle on the way to Kati”, about 15 kilometers from the capital and where the riot started.

The mutineers took control of the military camp and the surrounding streets, then headed for the center of the capital, according to an AFP correspondent. In Bamako they were met with applause by the protesters demanding the resignation of Ibrahim Boubacar Keita (IBK). The president of the African Union (AU) Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, criticized the arrest of the Head of State and the Head of Government, calling for his immediate release.
