Sewers of two million Portuguese monitored to predict second wave

Wastewater from five WWTPs in large urban centers and effluents from three main hospitals are being monitored.

The sewage of around two million Portuguese are being monitored to detect the presence of the new coronavirus early and anticipate a new wave of the disease. The COVIDETECT research project, coordinated by Águas de Portugal and launched in April, is already analyzing the wastewater from five WWTPs in large urban centers and the effluents from three main hospitals. The goal is, in the near future, to use a digital tool to provide health authorities with real-time information.
