It is estimated that one in five European children is the victim of some form of sexual violence.
Isolation due to the covid-19 pandemic has increased the number of child sexual abuse cases in the European Union (EU), notably on the internet, the European Commission reported this Friday, presenting measures to combat it.
“This is a very important issue, which has been increasing during the pandemic, [in addition to], in recent years, the sexual abuse of children has grown exponentially,” the European Commissioner told Brussels Lusa. Internal Affairs, Ylva Johansson, in an interview that will be published in full on Saturday.
Noting that, “during the pandemic, pedophiles spent more time on the Internet”, the commissioner noted that, according to investigations by European authorities, these criminals also “produced new videos” that they were posting on pedophile networks ‘online’.
