US diplomacy chief Mike Pompeo has warned Beijing of further retaliation for passing a law that restricts freedoms and autonomy for Hong Kong in what he called a “sad day”.
“Today is a sad day for Hong Kong and for all freedom lovers in China,” said the secretary of state.
He also warned that his country “will not stand still as China swallows Hong Kong with its authoritarian mouth,” after Chinese President Xi Jinping enacted a national security law for the former British colony.
