Timor must avoid complacency in the face of continued pandemic risk

The United Nations official in Timor-Leste said today that the authorities cannot be complacent in the face of the risk that remains of the covid-19 pandemic, gradually removing the restrictions in place and maintaining health surveillance measures.

“With the total number of covid-19 cases reaching 10 million, the death toll approaching 500,000 and about 135 million jobs lost so far, according to the International Labor Organization (ILO), all countries need to ensure that there is no complacency in responding to the pandemic, ”said Roy Trivedy, speaking to Lusa.

It is about, he explained, making “difficult choices about how best to protect citizen’s health and ensuring that the pandemic is contained, while supporting economies to recover, people returning to ‘normal’ work and “normal lives”.
