Animal adoption soars, but NGOs feel effects of pandemic

Adopting a pet and making the quarantine less lonely and heavy is in the plans of many people in this pandemic. But shelters are packed with dogs and cats waiting for a family.

The isolation and uncertainties caused after the first cases of the disease in Brazil, led to a drop in adoptions. With the months, orders increased again, but still in lower numbers than registered before the arrival of the virus, according to protectors.

The trend was also observed on the internet. After being discontinued in March, interest in searching for the terms adoption of animals, adoption of dogs and adoption of cats started to gradually increase in April. Now in June, the interest is already double that registered in March and 73% higher than the monthly average of the last ten years, according to data from Google Trends.
