Mozambique declares capital of Cabo Delgado as place of community transmission

In the province battered by terrorist attacks, Pemba was still considered a safe place. But now Covid-19 is attacking. The Minister of Health declared the city the second point with the highest community transmission in the country, after Nampula

The Minister of Health of Mozambique today declared the city of Pemba the second point with “community transmission” of the new coronavirus, following the rapid evolution of the number of infections in the provincial capital of Cabo Delgado, in the north of the country. “The city of Pemba is today declared as the second geographic point [after the city of Nampula] to transition from the pattern of outbreaks of transmission to a community transmission”, declared Armindo Tiago, speaking during the press conference to update data on the pandemic at the Ministry of Health in Maputo.

The first covid-19 patient in Mozambique was announced on March 22 and Pemba only registered its first case almost a month later (on April 22), but it is among the cities with the most active cases today. “We found a high percentage of positivity in the samples tested, which currently corresponds to almost twice the national average,” said Armindo Tiago.
