He was one of the richest men in Brazil in the 19th century, and like other men of high society, he had no problems in using slavery.
It may seem like fiction, but it is not and is told in the book Barão de Guaraciaba – Um Negro no Brasil Império, by the historian Carlos Alberto Dias Ferreira. Francisco Paulo de Almeida was a Brazilian businessman of the 19th century, who had hundreds of slaves in the coffee plantations.
“It is not a contradiction that he was black and owned slaves, as he was aware of the period in which he lived and needed labor to run his farms. And the available labor was the slave, ”Dias Ferreira told BBC Brasil.
