President of El Salvador decrees maximum state of emergency in prisons

In his authoritarian escalation, the president of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, decreed a state of maximum emergency in the country’s prisons. Prisoners are now prohibited from going out in the sun and members of different criminal factions (known as “maras” in El Salvador) can stay in the same cells. Family visits were also suspended.
