More than sixty of the best known Dutch economists, including university professors and bankers, criticize their government for the uncompromising stance taken by Prime Minister Mark Rutte and Finance Minister Wopke Hoekstra on a common, European solution to the coronavirus crisis and for the financial threat that Italy, Spain and other European countries anticipate.
But the criticisms do not end there. The way the Netherlands rejects any kind of European solution now threatens the governmental coalition itself. Rob Jetten, the leader of the D66 parliamentary group (one of the four parties that form the current government coalition), wrote a very critical text for the Hague executive. And he asked for it to be published in newspapers in southern Europe.
