The upcoming El Niño climate phenomenon has a 69 percent probability of becoming the strongest ever recorded since tracking began in 1950, according to a report released Thursday by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
The NOAA Climate Prediction Center stated that the climate pattern, anticipated to peak between October and December, could represent an historic event exceeding previous intensity benchmarks, with sea surface temperatures rising 2.5 degrees Celsius above historical averages.
Scientists noted that the phenomenon has continued to intensify since its initial onset, registering equatorial Pacific surface temperature anomalies greater than 2 degrees Celsius alongside sub-surface anomalies reaching up to 10 degrees.

According to meteorologists, the strengthening climate pattern is expected to alter global weather dynamics through the autumn and winter of 2026–2027. For the United States, the phenomenon typically brings drier conditions and milder winter temperatures to northern regions, alongside increased rainfall and flood risks across the southern tier.
Additionally, the atmospheric shifts enhance tropical cyclone activity in the Pacific while suppressing hurricane formation in the Atlantic.
The NOAA update follows confirmed global climate metrics, including records showing July as the hottest month on record in the United States. Concurrently, the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service reported that global sea surface temperatures outside polar regions reached record highs in July, driven substantially by warming trends across the tropical Pacific.
