A man set himself on fire on Thursday (2) in front of United Nations headquarters in New York and died from his burns, city police said.
The New York Police Department told Agence France-Presse (AFP) that it received a report at 6:32 p.m. (11:32 p.m. in Lisbon) stating that a man had set himself on fire near the United Nations headquarters.
“His death was confirmed at Bellevue Hospital” in Manhattan, the police said, adding that they have launched an investigation. The police did not disclose any motive for the act, but the New York Post reported that the man was carrying a Tibetan flag at the time of the incident.
“We are saddened by this tragic and terrible incident and extend our condolences to his family,” said a spokesperson for UN Secretary-General António Guterres in a statement sent to AFP.
