Belgium, competing in its 15th World Cup and fourth consecutive tournament, could not manage more than a 1-1 draw against Egypt in the opening match of Group G, played in Seattle. The Egyptian side, making their fourth appearance at a World Cup and captained by Mohamed Salah, took an early lead in the 20th minute courtesy of a goal by Emam Ashour.
However, the Belgians found an equalizer in the second half when Mohamed Hany scored an own goal in the 66th minute while desperately trying to prevent the ball from reaching Romelu Lukaku.

With this result, both Belgium and Egypt provisionally sit at the top of Group G with one point each. The first round of fixtures for the group will conclude later tonight when Iran faces New Zealand in Los Angeles.
