Driven by an unprecedented global surge in demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure, Taiwan has officially overtaken India to become the fifth-largest stock market in the world. According to data compiled by Bloomberg, the island’s equity market capitalization now trails only the United States, mainland China, Japan, and Hong Kong.

The combined value of companies listed on the Taiwanese stock exchange climbed to 4.95 trillion dollars, edging past India’s market value, which recently consolidated at 4.92 trillion dollars. This structural shift highlights a broader global trend where tech-heavy markets are rapidly outpacing nations with less direct exposure to the ongoing AI investment cycle.

The primary engine behind this historic rally is Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the world’s largest advanced chipmaker, which alone commands a massive 42% weighting in the island’s benchmark Taiex index.

TSMC shares have skyrocketed nearly 45% since the beginning of the year, triggering a massive wave of capital into other local technology giants, including Unimicron, MediaTek, and ASE Technology. This broader tech boom propelled the Taiex index up by more than 48% this year, pushing it past the historic 40,000-point milestone for the first time in history.

The AI frenzy is also dramatically fueling the local economy, lifting Taiwan’s first-quarter GDP growth to a near four-decade high of 13.69%.
