California requests emergency from Trump over chemical leak (with video)

"With federal support, aid can begin to arrive while the incident is still actively evolving," Governor Newsom stated in his press release

The State of California has formally requested a federal emergency declaration from U.S. President Donald Trump due to a toxic chemical leak in an industrial tank. The structure is reportedly at risk of imminent collapse, a critical situation that has already forced the evacuation of roughly 50,000 residents.

The displaced residents live in the immediate vicinity of a GKN Aerospace facility in the city of Garden Grove. On Thursday, an active leak was detected in a storage tank containing approximately 7,000 gallons (26,498 liters) of methyl methacrylate—a highly volatile, toxic, and flammable liquid widely used in the manufacturing of acrylic plastics.

A presidential emergency declaration would unlock immediate financial and operational backing from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to offset the mounting costs of mass evacuations, emergency temporary housing, and medical assistance. This was detailed in an official statement released Sunday by the office of California Governor Gavin Newsom.

Furthermore, a federal directive would empower FEMA to mobilize specialized personnel, advanced monitoring equipment, and technical assets directly to the site to assist in containing the hazard.

State and local emergency crews are currently locked in a race against time to stabilize the compromised tank. Authorities warn that a structural collapse could unleash thousands of gallons of the hazardous chemical into the surrounding environment or, in a worst-case scenario, trigger a massive chemical explosion.

Orange County Fire Authority Acting Chief TJ McGovern stated on Sunday that a suspected crack discovered in the tank might actually indicate that internal pressure is beginning to subside. However, stabilization efforts have been heavily complicated by the nature of the chemical itself, which is undergoing an uncontrolled exothermic reaction, meaning it is continuously generating its own internal heat.

“With federal support, aid can begin to arrive while the incident is still actively evolving,” Governor Newsom stated in his press release.

According to state emergency management officials, California has already deployed more than 785 first responders to the area, including highly trained hazardous materials (HazMat) specialist teams. The influx of federal funding would also help subsidize the overtime wages of these local emergency crews working around the clock.

The White House has not yet publicly responded to the emergency request from the Democratic governor, which is designed to aid a geographic area of Orange County that trends largely Republican.
