Trump to deploy 5,000 American soldiers to Poland (with video)

The American President referred to these troops as additional, but it was not immediately clear if this meant entirely new forces or if Trump was reinstating a previous deployment plan for 4,000 American soldiers, which had already been planned but was recently put into question by Washington

U.S. President Donald Trump announced today the deployment of 5,000 more soldiers to Poland, days after announcing the withdrawal of the exact same number of American military personnel from Germany.

“Following the successful election of the current President of Poland, Karol Nawrocki, whom I had the honor to support, and given our relationship with him, I am pleased to announce that the United States will send an additional 5,000 troops to Poland,” he declared in a brief message on his social network, Truth Social, without providing further details.

The American President referred to these troops as additional, but it was not immediately clear if this meant entirely new forces or if Trump was reinstating a previous deployment plan for 4,000 American soldiers, which had already been planned but was recently put into question by Washington.

Vice President JD Vance had already stated on Tuesday that this deployment was delayed, rather than canceled, while simultaneously advocating for greater European autonomy in defense matters.

“We need more sovereignty and for Europe to sustain itself on its own, and this remains our strategy in Europe,” Vance declared during a press conference. Questioned about the 4,000 soldiers, he responded that it was simply a delay in troop rotation. These American troop movements are being closely monitored after the U.S. President threatened to punish European allies who did not support his war against Iran.

The Pentagon had already announced in May the withdrawal of 5,000 soldiers from Germany. The withdrawal announcement was interpreted as a direct reaction to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s criticism of the lack of American strategy in the conflict with Iran and its humiliating outcome for Washington.

Trump stated that this reduction could be even larger and announced earlier this month that he was considering pulling troops from Italy as well, after Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni defended Pope Leo XIV from attacks by the American leader.

Trump administration officials have also alluded to a possible withdrawal from bases in Spain, which banned the use of American facilities in the country within the context of the war against Iran. Trump has harshly criticized NATO members, accusing them of failing to support Washington in the war against Iran, which was initiated by the United States and Israel without prior consultation with their allies.

NATO assured this week that the planned withdrawal of around 5,000 American military personnel from Europe did not compromise the Alliance’s deterrence and defense capabilities. “I would like to emphasize that this decision does not affect the viability of our regional plans,” declared the Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), American General Alexus G. Grynkewich, following a meeting of the NATO Military Committee in Brussels.

Currently, the United States maintains more than 36,000 military personnel deployed in Germany, distributed across various strategic installations, including the Ramstein Air Base, the headquarters in Wiesbaden, and the training centers of Grafenwohr and Hohenfels in Bavaria.
