The President of the Angolan Parliament, Adão de Almeida, highlighted the deep-rooted “spontaneous relationship” between Angola and Mozambique during an official visit to Maputo, calling for greater unity between the two legislative bodies to defend their mutual interests across the African continent and the Lusophone world.

During his address at the Assembly of the Republic of Mozambique, the Angolan leader emphasized that the long-standing connection between the two nations should serve as a foundation for institutional cooperation, noting that their shared history of overcoming challenges necessitates close collaboration between their state organizations.

As a tangible step toward deepening these ties, the two parliaments signed an addendum to their two-decade-old cooperation protocol, establishing a framework that will govern their bilateral relationship until 2028. This updated agreement provides for a series of joint actions, including the exchange of legislative experiences aimed at effectively solving the problems faced by their respective populations.

Adão de Almeida underscored the importance of unified positioning within international organizations, including the Southern African Development Community (SADC), the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP), and the Pan-African Parliament. He urged both assemblies to stand together in defending their national and regional proposals, asserting that this concertation of positions is essential for the collective progress of their countries.

The President of the Mozambican Parliament, Margarida Talapa, echoed these sentiments, highlighting that the bonds of friendship between the two nations were forged during the fight against Portuguese colonialism. She noted that while the two countries were historically united in their struggle for political liberation, they must now focus their efforts on the fight for economic independence.

Talapa also expressed deep gratitude on behalf of the Mozambican people for the solidarity shown by Angola during the devastating floods in January, which resulted in the loss of lives and widespread damage to infrastructure.

She concluded by advocating for an even closer parliamentary relationship that mirrors the bilateral cooperation already established by their respective governments. Adão de Almeida’s official visit to Mozambique commenced on Sunday and is scheduled to continue through April 30.
