Mozambican police announced today the detention of three people in Maputo, including two Mexicans suspected of belonging to the Sinaloa Cartel, one of the world’s largest organized crime syndicates, who allegedly intended to establish operations in Mozambique.

According to information from the National Criminal Investigation Service (Sernic) sent to Lusa, the arrests were made on April 11 at Maputo International Airport as part of an effort to combat international drug trafficking. Sernic, which noted that more details will be provided later today, stated that the three detainees are under “strong suspicion of involvement in international drug trafficking, document forgery, and criminal association.”

“The two Mexicans are identified as members of the Sinaloa Cartel in Mexico and intended to establish themselves in national territory, specifically in the Matutuíne district of Maputo province,” Sernic explained.

The Sinaloa Cartel, founded in 1987 in western Mexico, is considered one of the largest international organized crime syndicates in the world, involved in drug trafficking and money laundering, and is classified as a terrorist organization by the United States.
