Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is expected to visit Portugal on April 21, according to a source from the presidential office in Brasília.

During the trip, Lula is scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Luís Montenegro and President António José Seguro. If confirmed, it will mark the first meeting between Lula and the Portuguese head of state.

The two leaders were unable to meet earlier this year, as Lula missed Seguro’s inauguration due to a prior commitment with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, a fellow partner within the BRICS group.

Lula and Montenegro, however, have met twice in 2025, both times in Brazil. Their first meeting took place in February during the 14th Brazil-Portugal Summit in Brasília, followed by another encounter in November at COP30 in Belém do Pará.

Before heading to Portugal, Lula is also expected to visit Spain between April 16 and 18 at the invitation of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. The trip will include a bilateral meeting on April 17 and participation in the fourth high-level meeting of the “In Defense of Democracy” initiative on April 18 in Barcelona.

The visit to Portugal is expected to reinforce diplomatic ties between the two countries, following a series of recent high-level engagements.
