U.S. President Donald Trump expressed optimism about reaching a peace agreement with Iran’s new leadership, claiming that the recent conflict alongside Israel led to a de facto regime change in Tehran.

Speaking to reporters, Trump said the killing of key figures—including former supreme leader Ali Khamenei—resulted in a shift in power. He described the new leadership as “very different” and “much more reasonable,” adding that he “sees a deal, maybe soon.”

The U.S. leader also indicated that Iran could soon allow around 20 oil tankers to pass through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, which had been blocked. The disruption of this route—responsible for transporting roughly 20% of global oil and gas—triggered a surge in energy prices.

In an interview with the Financial Times, Trump warned that U.S. forces could “very easily” seize Kharg Island, Iran’s main oil export hub in the Persian Gulf, which accounts for about 90% of the country’s crude exports. The island had already been targeted in a U.S. strike in mid-March.

Meanwhile, tensions remain high. Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf accused Washington of signaling openness to negotiations while allegedly preparing for a ground offensive.

Iran’s new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, has largely stayed out of public view since taking power, issuing only a written message condemning the U.S.-Israeli offensive as “aggression.” His absence has fueled speculation, with Trump even questioning whether he is alive.

The developments highlight a volatile mix of diplomatic signals and military escalation, leaving uncertainty over whether a peace deal is truly within reach.
