Former goalkeeper Silvino Louro, who played for Benfica and FC Porto and was capped for Portugal, died today aged 67, the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) announced.
“The FPF joins the family, friends and all those who knew him in mourning, remembering with respect and recognition Silvino Louro’s contribution and legacy to Portuguese football. More than the goalkeeper, Silvino will be remembered for his character, professionalism and good humour — a figure universally appreciated by all fans,” the federation said in a statement.
Born in Setúbal in 1959, Silvino represented Vitória de Setúbal, Vitória de Guimarães, Desportivo das Aves, Benfica, FC Porto and Salgueiros over two decades as a player, winning eight trophies and earning 23 caps for the Portugal national team.
The rest of his career was dedicated to specialist goalkeeping coaching, with stints at FC Porto, Chelsea, Manchester United, Inter Milan and Real Madrid — always as part of José Mourinho’s coaching staff, the current Benfica manager — before a final stint at Sudanese club Al Hilal Omdurman.
