A team studied stool samples from 90 healthy young adults and 33 adults aged 62 or over to analyse whether certain gut microbes are associated with muscle strength. Participants also underwent various physical fitness and strength tests, combined with measurements of their cardiorespiratory capacity.
Researchers have identified a gut bacterium capable of improving muscle strength — a discovery that could lead to the development of a probiotic to help maintain physical fitness during ageing.
