Iran announces consensus on new supreme leader after death of Ali Khamenei

The Iranian Assembly of Experts announced that it has reached a consensus on the new supreme leader of the country, who will succeed Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who died on February 28 in joint attacks by the United States and Israel on the first day of the war. The name of the successor has not yet been disclosed.

According to Iran’s state agency IRNA, Mohsen Heydari, the representative of Khuzestan province in the Assembly of Experts, confirmed that the most suitable candidate for the position has been chosen. “The most suitable candidate, approved by the majority of the Assembly of Experts, has been designated,” the religious official declared.

The decision was also confirmed by another member of the body, Mohammad Mehdi Mirbagheri, who in a video released by the Fars agency stated that “a firm decision, reflecting the majority position, was made.”

The supreme leader is the highest political and religious authority in Iran. In addition to directing the state, the position also represents the highest leadership of Shiism, a minority stream of Islam globally but dominant in Iran and with a strong presence in countries such as Iraq, Syria, and Lebanon.

Ali Khamenei had led the country since 1989 and was killed during the initial attacks of the military offensive launched by the United States and Israel against Tehran, which marked the beginning of the current conflict in the Middle East.

Until the new supreme leader took office, the Iranian Leadership Council temporarily assumed direction of the country.
