Sporting beat FC Porto 1-0 and took the advantage in the Portuguese Cup semi-finals, in the first leg played at Estádio José Alvalade in Lisbon.
Colombian forward Luís Suárez scored from the penalty spot in the 62nd minute to give the Lions the win, having lost 1-2 at home to the Dragons in the Primeira Liga.
The second leg, scheduled for Estádio do Dragão in Porto, has not yet been given a date, with the match expected to take place between April 21 and 23.
Sporting are the reigning Portuguese Cup holders, having won it amid great controversy against Benfica in the 2024/25 final. In the current edition, they also progressed with huge controversy in the Azores, against Santa Clara in the round of sixteen.
With last season’s triumph, the Lions now hold 18 titles, against 20 for FC Porto and 26 for record holders Benfica.
In the first leg of the other semi-final, Fafe, of the Liga 3, drew 1-1 at home to Torreense, of the Segunda Liga, on February 4.
