Nuclear: US and Iran to hold new “technical talks” next week in Vienna (with video)

A fourth round of negotiations, still to be confirmed by Oman and the United States, will again focus on Iran’s nuclear program

Oman’s Minister of Foreign Affairs announced today that the United States and Iran will hold “technical discussions” next week in Vienna, Austria, after concluding negotiations in Geneva.

“We concluded the day after significant progress in the negotiations between the United States and Iran,” said Badr al-Busaidi on the social media platform X, adding that “technical discussions will take place next week in Vienna.”

In his first reaction following the talks, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the next meeting to discuss technical elements in Austria will take place as early as Monday, after which the delegations from Tehran and Washington will hold another round of indirect negotiations “in less than a week.”

The technical meeting scheduled for Monday was agreed with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). According to Araghchi, speaking via Telegram, the UN agency will organize the meeting “to reach a framework and a model for some of the technical issues.”

“We made very positive progress and addressed with great seriousness the elements of an agreement, both in the nuclear domain and regarding sanctions,” Araghchi told state television at the end of the negotiations held in Geneva.

A fourth round of negotiations, still to be confirmed by Oman and the United States, will again focus on Iran’s nuclear program and, according to Araghchi, will also address Western sanctions.

“We have very clear expectations regarding the lifting of sanctions,” the Iranian minister added.

Delegations from Washington and Tehran held the third round of indirect negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program earlier today in Geneva, Switzerland, resuming in the afternoon under Omani mediation.

The talks have gained added significance amid US threats of possible military intervention on Iranian territory. US President Donald Trump gave a deadline of “10 to 15 days” on February 19 to decide whether an agreement with Tehran was possible or whether force would be used.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Esmail Baghai, said today that the discussions were intense and marked by “concrete proposals.”

Oman’s foreign minister also met this morning with the US delegation, which included Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, to “discuss the Iranian side’s views and proposals and the responses and questions from the US negotiating team” regarding aspects of Iran’s nuclear program.

He also met with IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi to discuss “new ideas being negotiated between Iran and the United States, coinciding with the start of a new round of indirect talks between the two countries.”

In this context, al-Busaidi stressed the importance of the “professional and technical role played by the IAEA in ensuring transparency, credibility, and the management of procedures” related to the terms of any potential nuclear agreement between the United States and Iran.

The third round of talks took place in a tense atmosphere, as the United States deployed a large military contingent to the Middle East, including the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, while the world’s largest aircraft carrier, the USS Gerald Ford, was also heading toward the region.

According to a survey by Agence France-Presse (AFP), the United States has more than 300 warplanes available in the region that could be activated for an attack on Tehran.

The United States and several Western countries accuse Iran of seeking to develop nuclear weapons, allegations that Tehran denies.

Trump has repeatedly issued threats against the Islamic Republic if a consensus is not reached and said on Monday that “it will be a bad day for the country [Iran] and, unfortunately, for its people” if an agreement is not concluded.

Iran, in turn, has warned that if it is attacked, it will respond forcefully and that the conflict will spread throughout the region.
