Former UK ambassador Peter Mandelson detained on suspicion of involvement in the Epstein case (with video)

The former Labour minister and former British ambassador to the United States, Peter Mandelson, was detained on Monday under suspicion of misconduct in a public office, the Metropolitan Police reported.

Video footage released by the media shows Peter Mandelson being taken from his residence in Camden in an unmarked vehicle, shortly after being escorted by police officers. Authorities conducted searches at two of the former minister’s properties, located in Camden and Wiltshire.

According to the police, 72-year-old Mandelson is suspected of having provided information to Jeffrey Epstein, the financier involved in cases of sexual abuse while serving as Secretary of State for Business, Innovation, and Skills. Epstein died in 2019 while awaiting trial in the United States.

A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police explained that the suspect was taken to a station in London for questioning. “Agents arrested a 72-year-old man on suspicion of misconduct in a public office. The arrest followed the execution of search warrants at two addresses in Wiltshire and Camden,” they added.

The British government also announced that documents related to the appointment of Mandelson as ambassador to the US would be published at the beginning of March, increasing scrutiny of the process.

Peter Mandelson was an influential figure in the Labour Party, having held important ministerial positions in the governments of Tony Blair and Gordon Brown before representing the United Kingdom in Washington between 2009 and 2010. To date, no formal charges have been brought, with the investigation continuing.
