The most shared images show snow-covered runways, long lines of passengers waiting for information, and enormous queues at customer service desks, with many travelers visibly irritated and exhausted. Most of the morning flights that were scheduled have been canceled or delayed, leaving hundreds of people stranded in the boarding areas.
Due to the heavy snowfall, the airport temporarily suspended operations in the morning, with the partial resumption being delayed until around noon local time (11:00 GMT), and is expected to resume some takeoffs and landings later in the afternoon.
According to the airport operator, about 150 of the 232 flights schedules programmed until noon have already been canceled, forcing airlines to reroute passengers or keep massive lines at check-in and information desks.
The weather conditions also affected road and rail transport in the surrounding area, and local authorities warned that disruptions may continue throughout the day.
Aviation experts assert that extreme weather phenomena, such as the current snowstorm in Vienna, continue to cause significant disruptions to European air traffic, impacting not only passengers but also logistics and international connections.
