Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said at a press conference that Beijing consistently and firmly opposes any country that has established diplomatic relations with China from signing agreements with Taiwan that are of this nature.
Guo added that the United States “must effectively comply with the ‘One China’ principle and the Three Joint Communiqués,” referring to the agreements signed in 1972, 1979, and 1982 that govern the framework of bilateral relations between the two countries.
The response came after the spokesman was asked about the trade agreement announced on Thursday between Washington and Taipei, which includes a reduction in tariffs on certain Taiwanese products and investment commitments in the United States.
Beijing did not comment on the economic content of the pact or its industrial or technological implications, focusing its reaction on the political and diplomatic aspects.
