LRT East Line nears 50% completion amid plans for South and West extensions

The Macau Public Works Bureau announced last week that construction of the Light Rapid Transit (LRT) East Line is nearly 50 % complete. A key component of the project, the three-kilometer undersea tunnel connecting Taipa to the Macau Peninsula, has already advanced by one kilometer. The East Line is scheduled to become operational by 2029. Additionally, the government is preparing for public consultation on a comprehensive expansion plan. This includes the Seac Pai Van branch, the Northern Taipa Line, the Southern Line, and the Western Line.

According to the ” Land Transport Master Plan, 2021-2030,” the completion of the East Line will significantly boost the LRT’s capacity. By 2030, the network is projected to grow from its current 9.3 kilometers and 11 stations to 24 kilometers with 21 stations. Officials predict daily passenger volume will surge from a 2020 average of 2,880 to approximately 137,000. Consequently, the LRT’s share of motorized travel in the city is expected to rise from 0.2 % to roughly 9%.

Following the China State Council’s approval of Macau’s jurisdiction over a specific V-shaped land and sea area, authorities are moving forward with extending the East Line to Qingmao Port. This extension will run westward from the ES1 station, passing the Border Gate and Dr. Sun Yat Sen Municipal Park via shield tunneling. Completion is targeted for the first half of 2031.

The proposed Southern Line will operate entirely underground to ensure all-weather service. It is designed to run from the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge artificial island, through New Urban Zone Area A, the NAPE, and Nam Van Lake, terminating at Barra. Meanwhile, the Western Line is planned to connect Qingmao to Barra, passing through Areia Preta and the Inner Harbor. However, the Inner Harbor section requires land reclamation for flood control embankments, a complex undertaking that awaits final approval from the Central Government.
