The Macao Technological Innovation Exploration in Lisbon 2025, held from 10 to 14 November, is part of Sands China’s support for the Macao SAR Government in promoting the sustainable development of smart tourism and high-tech industries. The initiative was co-organised by the Macao Economic and Technological Development Bureau (DSEDT) and supported by the Macao Science and Technology Development Fund (FDCT). Coordination was carried out by the Sands Resorts Incubation Centre, a company initiative that is dedicated to discovering and supporting local innovative enterprises with development potential.

After last year’s visit to Lisbon was “widely acclaimed”, Chum states that the company will continue to “align with the Macao SAR government’s policies and direction in promoting ‘tourism + technology’ and capitalise on Macao’s role as a platform between China and Portuguese-speaking countries to contribute to the city’s diversified economic development.”

Chum emphasises that this year the company once again created “a forward-looking international platform for a new cohort of Macao enterprises”, broadening their technological and innovation horizons, “while establishing meaningful connections with Lisbon companies.”

He noted that participation in the Web Summit, which “drew more than 71,000 participants from 157 countries”, gave delegates “an opportunity to gain knowledge of advanced technology and forge connections with their counterparts.” Chum also expressed his gratitude for the support of the Macao Economic and Technological Development Bureau (DSEDT) and the Macao Science and Technology Development Fund (FDCT), which “made this trip possible.”

In a written statement, DSEDT added that Macao serves as “an important gateway for China’s opening-up”, benefiting from the principle of “One Country, Two Systems”, free-port status, the free flow of capital, and the “close ties with Portuguese-speaking countries.”

DSEDT also noted that the future Macao Science and Technology Research and Development Industrial Park “will be positioned as a launchpad for the Chinese mainland’s high-quality tech enterprises to expand overseas, a service hub for cutting-edge international tech projects to establish a presence, and a local base for integration of industry, academia, and research.”

On the final day in Lisbon, members of the delegation also took part in a workshop entitled “Concrete Opportunities”, led by Manuel Tânger, faculty member in Disruption, Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Singularity University Portugal . The session focused on identifying innovation opportunities, inviting participants to work together on challenges, and sharing ideas.
