Uber launches taxi rides in Macau

The service aims to simplify local transport for residents and visitors by allowing licensed taxi trips to be booked and paid for digitally in the app

Platform

Uber has introduced taxi rides in Macau through its app, enabling users to request licensed local taxis with fares charged according to the official meter and paid directly in the platform, according to the company. The service became available on February 3.

Under the new option, riders can book Macau taxis without using cash or additional applications. Uber said the app supports multiple languages and includes standard safety features such as trip tracking and emergency assistance.

The taxi service is designed to offer a consistent booking and payment experience for both residents and tourists navigating the city. Fares follow Macau’s regulated taxi pricing system, with payments processed in-app, according to Uber.

Alongside the Macau taxi launch, Uber has also introduced a cross-border limousine booking option between Hong Kong and Macao. The service allows point-to-point trips in both directions with upfront pricing that includes bridge and tunnel tolls, according to the company.

The cross-border trips are operated by Kwoon Chung Bus Holdings and must be booked at least 24 hours in advance, with reservations available up to 90 days ahead, according to Uber.

Commenting on the launch, the General Manager of Uber Hong Kong, Estyn Chung, said the services are “new way for people to travel easily between Hong Kong and Macau, as well as getting around in Macau when they are there”. He added that the initiative supports Macau’s tourism development while creating new opportunities for drivers, in remarks released by the company.

Thousands of people travel daily between Hong Kong and Macau for work, family visits, and leisure. Cross-border journeys have traditionally involved multiple modes of transport and extended waiting times, making direct booking options a growing focus for mobility providers in the region.
