Over 75% of Macau youth back construction of LRT West Line, survey shows

More than 75% of young people in Macau support construction of the city’s Light Rail Transit (LRT) West Line despite low ridership on the current network, according to a new survey released by the Macau New Chinese Youth Association.

The poll found that most respondents believe the West Line would improve network coverage and enhance public transport connectivity in local communities. The proposed line would extend north from the existing Barra Station and serve the city’s old Inner Harbour districts on the Macau Peninsula.

The street survey was conducted randomly between June and July, collecting 647 responses from Macau residents aged 18 to 44. Nearly 60% said they had taken the LRT at least once in the past year, though the majority were infrequent users—taking the system once every three months or less. Only 1.5% identified the LRT as their main mode of transport.

While 39% of respondents said they were satisfied with the overall LRT service, many cited limited network coverage as the main barrier to regular use. The distance between LRT stations and residential areas, along with the lack of direct connections to major destinations, were frequently mentioned concerns. Some also pointed to inconvenient payment methods as a deterrent.

More than 70% of respondents said the Macau SAR government should continue expanding the rail network after completion of the LRT East Line, which is currently under development. Support for the West Line reached 75%, signalling broad backing among young residents for extending the LRT to more neighbourhoods.

The Macau New Chinese Youth Association urged authorities to accelerate planning and construction of the West Line to integrate the LRT more effectively into residents’ daily travel patterns. It also called for improvements to the passenger experience, including fare integration with public buses, transfer discounts, expanded payment options such as QR codes and credit cards, and the launch of an official mobile app to improve system convenience.
