Venezuelan opposition figure María Corina Machado wins the Nobel Peace Prize. Trump was also in the running.

The announcement was made by the chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, Jørgen Watne Frydnes. There were 338 nominees.

Venezuelan opponent María Corina Machado is the winner of the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize “for her tireless work in promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.”

María Corina Machado, of Portuguese descent, is the leader of the opposition to the Nicolás Maduro regime, living in hiding since the July 2024 presidential elections. The opposition claimed victory for its candidate, Edmundo González (María Corina Machado herself was barred from running), but Venezuelan authorities controlled by the regime attributed the victory to Maduro.

The announcement was made by the president of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, Jørgen Watne Frydnes, in Oslo. There were 338 candidates nominated for this year’s Nobel Peace Prize, of which 244 were individuals and 94 organizations.
