Chinese Architect and Brazilian Documentarian Die in Plane Crash in Brazil’s Pantanal

Accident at farm in Mato Grosso do Sul killed four people; Air Force investigates causes of the tragedy

The crash of an aircraft on Tuesday night (23) in the city of Aquidauana, in Mato Grosso do Sul, in Brazil’s Midwest region, caused the death of four people, among them Chinese architect Kongjian Yu, 62, and documentarian Luiz Ferraz, 42. Also killed were cinematographer Rubens Crispim Jr., 51, and pilot Marcelo Pereira de Barros, 59. The tragedy occurred at a farm in the Pantanal area during a landing attempt.

Kongjian Yu, a world reference in sustainable urbanism, was in Brazil for recordings about his work. He is the creator of the “sponge cities” concept, applied in more than 250 cities to prevent flooding and revitalize urban areas. Ferraz was known for productions such as the documentary about the Chapecoense tragedy, the soccer team that lost several players and staff in a plane crash in 2016, and projects with international platforms.

According to Anac, the plane, a 1958 Cessna 175 model, was in regular condition but did not have authorization for night flights. The Air Force and Civil Police are investigating the accident.
