The first cohort of students from Sands China’s Stage Technology and Event Production Course attend their graduation ceremony at Escola Luso-Chinesa Técnico-Profissional July 17. Some graduates have already been recruited by Sands China, either as full-time staff or trainees, contributing to backstage support for large-scale events.
12 students have graduated from the first cohort of Sands China’s Stage Technology and Event Production Course, marking a milestone in Macao’s efforts to build a skilled talent pool for its performing arts sector. Launched in November 2021, the three-year course is the first of its kind in Macao and aims to support the city’s development as a “City of Performing Arts.”
Some graduates have already joined Sands China as full-time staff or trainees, contributing to backstage operations for large-scale events, while others are pursuing higher education in media arts and design in Macao, mainland China, South Korea, and Japan.
“Talent is a cornerstone of Macao’s transformation as a City of Performing Arts,” said Paulo Cheong, Senior Vice President of Human Resources for Sands China Ltd. “With our top-tier performance equipment and professional team, we consider it a significant responsibility and privilege for Sands China to utilise our resources to give hand-on experiences to the next generation who are interested in performing arts.”
Graduate Hou Che, now working in Sands China’s entertainment department, said: “I have been equipped with professional knowledge in entertainment in this course, which enabled me to apply my skills in a practical way by organising a small-scale event at St. Mark’s Square at The Venetian Macao.”
The curriculum included creative arts, lighting design, audio production, stage design, workplace safety, customer engagement, and teamwork, combined with a nine-month internship at Sands China’s entertainment venues. Since 2007, the company’s six multifunctional entertainment venues have hosted more than 850 top-tier performances, attracting over 5.3 million audience members.
Principal Chan Seng Chao of Escola Luso-Chinesa Técnico-Profissional praised the partnership: “For me, this course not only helps students pursue their academics, but also explore career paths. This parallel approach allows students to master professional skills that will advance their further studies; for those who choose to work after graduation, the knowledge and experiences gained from a three-year internship would also help them stand out among others.”
By combining education with hands-on training, Sands China and its partners aim to strengthen Macao’s cultural and creative industries while providing young people with real career opportunities in the entertainment field.
