The company announced on Tuesday that it is reducing its headcount across various levels and geographic locations. According to a company statement, the primary focus of these changes is to streamline management structures. Notifications were distributed on Tuesday (May 13th).
While the precise number of affected positions was not disclosed by the technology company, reports from The Associated Press indicate that the reduction will involve around 6,000 employees.
During an April earnings call, Microsoft Chief Financial Officer Amy Hood mentioned the company’s emphasis on organizational streamlining through the reduction of management layers. She also noted that the company’s headcount in March was 2% higher year-over-year and slightly lower compared to the end of 2024.
A Microsoft spokesperson stated that the company is “continuing to implement organizational changes necessary to best position the company for success in a dynamic marketplace.”
The company further explained that “to enhance our efficiency, we will minimize redundancy by streamlining our processes, procedures and roles.”
Based in Redmond, Washington, Microsoft reported a global workforce of 228,000 employees as of June 2024, according to company data. The company’s most recent significant workforce adjustment occurred in 2023, involving a reduction of 11,000 positions worldwide.
This announcement follows Microsoft’s recent report of strong financial performance. The company’s quarterly earnings report for the period ending March 31, 2025, indicated revenues of $70.1 billion, representing a 13% increase compared to the same period in the previous year.
