Bank of Portugal warns of fake reports of coin in honour of Ronaldo

The Bank of Portugal on Thursday warned of the circulation of false reports of the launch of an official coin in honour of footballer Cristiano Ronaldo, clarifying that such an activity is exclusive to the Casa da Moeda, the national mint, and that no such coin has been issued.

“The Bank of Portugal has become aware of fake news on foreign websites regarding the issue by the Bank of Portugal of a collector’s coin, worth 7.5 euros, in honour of footballer Cristiano Ronaldo,” reads a note from the sector supervisor.

The institution, which his headed by Mário Centeno, a former finance minister, clarified that it has not put any coins in circulation in honour of Ronaldo, nor does it plan to do so.

The bank also explained that the approval of the numismatic plan is the responsibility of the Casa da Moeda.
