Marathon world record holder Kelvin Kiptum dies

Marathon world record holder Kelvin Kiptum died this Sunday in a road accident in Kenya. He was 24 years old. Everything led to the belief that he would be the first athlete to run the marathon in less than two hours.

Kiptum was traveling on a road in the Elgeyo-Marakwet area when he lost control of his car, a Toyota Premio. The vehicle skidded and fell down a ravine about 60 meters high until it came to a stop after colliding with a tree, explained Peter Mulinge, police commander, cited by the local press.

The athlete and his coach died at the scene. A woman traveling with them was taken to hospital in critical condition.
