Scottish actor Robbie Coltrane, known for playing Rubeus Hagrid in the Harry Potter films, died Friday at the age of 72 in hospital near his home in Larbert, Scotland, the entertainment press said.
The news of the death was confirmed by his agent, Belinda Wright. “He will likely be best remembered for decades to come as Hagrid in the ‘Harry Potter’ films, a role that has brought joy to children and adults alike, generating a torrent of fan letters every week for over 20 years,” he wrote. The award-winning actor had been suffering from health problems for at least two years. In addition to “Harry Potter,” Coltrane conquered television with the role of forensic psychologist Dr. Eddie ‘Fitz’ Fitzgerald in the drama “Cracker”, for which he won three BAFTA Awards in the Best Actor category, equaled only by Michael Gambon.
