The new champion of the United States Open, the Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, confessed on Sunday, with the trophy in his hands, having fulfilled a “child’s dream”, by reaching the leadership of the world ranking.
“Being number one in the world is something I’ve dreamed of since childhood. Being a Grand Slam champion was something I worked really hard for. It’s hard to talk right now, there are so many emotions,” he added, at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York.
The tennis player from Murcia beat Norwegian Casper Ruud in the final in four sets, with partials of 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (7-1) and 6-3, in three hours and 20 minutes, and became the youngest ever number one and youngest Grand Slam champion since compatriot Rafael Nadal at Roland Garros in 2005.
