According to the information agencies Interfax, TASS and RIA Novosti, Gorbachev died this Tuesday night in a hospital in the Russian capital.
Gorbachev’s office had said the former head of state, who helped end the Cold War, was undergoing treatment at the hospital.
Putin expresses ‘deep sadness’
Russian President Vladimir Putin today expressed “deep sadness” at the death of Gorbachev, according to Russian presidency (Kremlin) spokesman Dmitry Peskov.
“Putin expresses his deep sadness at the death of Gorbachev. In the morning he will send a telegram of condolences to his family and friends, ”said Peskov, quoted by the Interfax news agency.
